A New Lift Shaft in Wrexham

Wrexham
Icon Construction

A new project with Icon Construction in Wrexham presented us with a specific and intricate challenge: creating an opening for a new lift shaft. The task was not just about cutting a hole in a concrete slab, but about doing so with a high degree of precision and control.

The project required us to work from below, cutting into a structural concrete slab to form the opening. This meant we had to be incredibly careful with our measurements and execution to avoid any damage to the surrounding structure. Our client, Icon Construction, was clear about their need for a solution that provided clean, precise cuts without any overcuts.

They also needed the cut material to be managed in a specific way for safe and efficient removal.

Precision Drilling and Sawing

We approached this project with a detailed plan to meet every requirement. Our solution combined diamond drilling and concrete sawing techniques to ensure a perfect result. We began by drilling pilot holes from the underside of the concrete slab.

This allowed us to accurately mark the exact corners of the planned lift shaft opening on the surface above. This initial step was crucial for guaranteeing the final opening would be perfectly aligned and sized, giving us a precise guide for the cutting process.

Once the pilot holes were in place, our team carefully marked out the square shape of the opening on the surface of the slab. The next stage involved the use of specialist diamond cutting equipment.

A key part of the client's brief was to avoid any overcuts, which can compromise the integrity of the surrounding concrete. To achieve this, we employed a meticulous process: we drilled the corners of the marked square, as well as the ends of each cut line, before commencing the main cutting work. This technique ensured that each cut was clean and contained within the designated area.

Cutting into Manageable Pieces

With the cutting plan established, we began the main work of sawing the opening. Icon Construction had a clear request for the removal of the cut concrete: they needed it to be divided into manageable pieces. We meticulously cut the entire opening into smaller sections, each measuring approximately 300mm x 300mm. This size was chosen to allow the client's team to safely and easily remove the material from the site without the need for heavy lifting machinery or compromising safety.

Throughout this process, our team maintained a focus on precision and safety. We used state-of-the-art equipment and our extensive experience to ensure that every cut was straight and true. The careful preparation and execution meant that we could deliver a clean, sharp-edged opening without any of the overcuts the client was concerned about.

Dust and slurry control measures were also in place to keep the workspace clean and safe for everyone on site. This commitment to a tidy and safe working environment is always a top priority for us.

A Flawless Opening and a Satisfied Client

The project was a complete success. The lift shaft opening was created to the exact dimensions and specifications required by Icon Construction. Our use of pilot holes, coupled with careful corner and end-of-cut drilling, ensured a flawless, overcut-free finish. The division of the concrete into small, manageable pieces greatly simplified the client's removal process, saving them time and effort. Icon Construction was able to move on with the next phase of their project with a perfectly prepared opening.

This case study demonstrates our ability to deliver highly precise and controlled diamond drilling and sawing solutions, even for challenging projects with strict requirements. Our expertise and collaborative approach ensured that we met and exceeded the client's expectations, providing a high-quality finish that contributed to the overall success of their project. We were pleased to play our part in delivering such an important element of the new building.
