JKC Developments faced a complex challenge during a fit-out project for Adidas on Manchester's busy Market Street.
The creation of a new staircase opening required the removal of a significant section of concrete flooring. Beyond the precision cutting itself, the primary logistical hurdle was the removal of the cut concrete pieces. With no direct ground-level access for machinery, each piece had to be manually transported down four flights of stairs and neatly stacked for collection by a grab wagon. This demanded not only precise cutting into manageable sizes but also meticulous planning for handling and transport in a high-footfall retail area.
DP Diamond Drilling was commissioned by JKC Developments for this intricate task, leveraging our expertise in concrete cutting within challenging urban and retail environments. Our solution was centred on a highly strategic approach to concrete cutting that directly addressed the unique removal logistics. We opted for track sawing, a method renowned for its ability to deliver accurate, clean cuts through concrete, essential for the subsequent manual handling.
A detailed pre-site assessment was conducted with JKC Developments. This included precise measurements of the opening, identification of the concrete's composition and depth, and, crucially, a thorough understanding of the removal route down four flights of stairs. This allowed us to plan the exact dimensions of each concrete segment, ensuring they were of a weight and size that could be safely and efficiently handled by the site team, while also being suitable for stacking.
Our skilled operatives deployed advanced track sawing equipment to the Manchester Market Street site. The opening for the new staircase was meticulously marked out, and the concrete floor was systematically cut into the predetermined manageable pieces. Each cut was executed with precision, ensuring uniform sizing and clean edges, which are vital for safe manual handling and stacking.
Wet cutting techniques were integral to our process. The continuous application of water to the diamond blade effectively suppressed dust, maintaining a clean and safe working environment – a particularly important consideration in an active retail location like Market Street. Furthermore, wet cutting significantly reduces noise compared to percussive methods, minimising disruption to nearby businesses and shoppers.
As each segment was cleanly cut, it was carefully lifted and transported down the four flights of stairs. Our team worked in close coordination with JKC Developments' personnel, ensuring that each piece was moved efficiently and safely. Upon reaching the ground level, the concrete segments were meticulously stacked in a designated area, ready for collection by the grab wagon. This systematic approach ensured that the site remained tidy and operational throughout the project.
