We were asked to carry out diamond drilling works on behalf of Bryn Build at a block of 6 flats in Bala, Wales. The requirement was to form a range of core holes through 500mm thick stone walls to accommodate various services throughout the building.
The scope of work included low-level cores from 50mm for sink and bath water waste, 127mm holes for waste pipes, as well as high-level 200mm holes for ducting, 112mm holes for a DMEV system, and 50mm holes for CCTV and external lighting.
Due to the thickness and nature of the stone walls, as well as the range of hole sizes and positions, a controlled and secure drilling setup was essential to achieve accurate results across all areas of the project.
Our team attended the site with both our handheld Gyro Rig and larger motor Gyro Rig to carry out the work. This allowed us to adapt to the different hole sizes and positions required throughout the flats while maintaining a consistent and controlled drilling approach.
The Gyro Rig setup provided a secure hold down method using an Acrow prop-style fixing between the floor and ceiling. This created a stable drilling position, which is particularly important when working through thick stone walls.
Each hole was carefully marked out in line with the service requirements before drilling began. Using diamond core drilling techniques, we worked methodically through the 500mm stone, maintaining steady pressure and full control throughout.
The combination of the correct equipment and a stable setup allowed us to achieve clean and accurate cores across both low-level and high-level positions within the building.

Gyro rigs are well suited for projects where a secure and stable drilling setup is required without the need for traditional fixings into the structure. By using an Acrow prop-style system, the rig can be braced between structurally sound floors and ceilings, providing a solid and reliable hold.
This method is particularly effective when working on internal projects like this, where maintaining the integrity of the surrounding structure is important. It also allows for quicker setup and repositioning between holes, supporting an efficient workflow across multiple drilling locations.
In this project, the Gyro Rig provided the stability needed to core through 500mm thick stone whilst maintaining accuracy across a wide range of hole sizes and positions.
All core holes were completed to the required sizes and positions, providing clean and accurate openings ready for the installation of waste pipes, ducting, DMEV systems, CCTV, and external lighting.
The controlled drilling approach and secure setup ensured consistent results throughout the project, allowing Bryn Build to continue with the next stages of the installation without delay.
We regularly support contractors with diamond drilling across residential and commercial developments, including projects involving thick stone and complex service requirements. Our approach is always focused on using the right equipment and delivering accurate, reliable results on site.
