Large-Diameter Core Drilling in Reinforced Concrete

Airbus, Chester
AJC Construction

The Project Brief

We were asked by AJC Construction to carry out specialist drilling works at the Airbus site in Chester. The requirement was to drill a 600mm diameter opening through heavily reinforced concrete to a depth of 1 metre.

Due to the thickness of the concrete and the amount of reinforcement present, the client initially expected the work to be completed using a stitch drilling method. This is commonly considered for openings of this size where reinforcement is heavy.

Once we arrived on site, we assessed the concrete and discussed the available options with AJC Construction. Based on our experience and the equipment available, we were confident the opening could be achieved using large-diameter diamond core drilling instead.

The Process

Our team attended site with heavy-duty diamond drilling rigs set up specifically for large-diameter drilling in reinforced concrete. Before starting, we carefully checked the drilling position and depth requirements to ensure the setup was correct.

Using specialist diamond core barrels, we worked methodically through the reinforced concrete, maintaining steady pressure and full control throughout. Drilling to a depth of 1 metre required careful management of both the concrete being removed and the steel reinforcement within it, while keeping the surrounding area unaffected.

We also used water throughout the drilling process to control dust and heat, helping to keep the process smooth, tidy and safe.

Managing Reinforcement and Depth

Large-diameter diamond core drilling at this depth requires a controlled and patient approach. By allowing the equipment to do the work, we were able to cut cleanly through both concrete and reinforcement without vibration or unnecessary stress on the surrounding material.

The 600mm opening was drilled to the full required depth, leaving a clean, accurately positioned hole exactly where it was needed.

A Successful Outcome for AJC Construction

The core was completed to specification, delivering a clean and precise result. The ability to achieve the opening using full-diameter diamond core drilling, rather than stitch drilling, came as a surprise to the client and demonstrated what can be achieved with the right equipment and experience.

Supporting Projects Nationwide

Our team regularly carries out specialist diamond drilling works in reinforced concrete across a wide range of commercial and industrial environments. While we’re based in Warrington in the North West, we work on commercial projects nationwide, supporting contractors who need accurate, reliable drilling solutions.

If your project involves large-diameter core drilling or challenging reinforced concrete, we’re always happy to discuss the most suitable approach. Contact our CHAS-accredited team today to find out more.
