Mag Drilling Through RSJ for Pipework Installation

Oldham, Manchester
Walter Thomson

The Project Brief

We were asked to carry out specialist magnetic drilling works at Acorn Lodge in Oldham as part of a refurbishment project. Working on behalf of Walter Thomson, the requirement was to drill through an existing RSJ (Rolled Steel Joist) to allow new pipework to be installed by the plumbing team.

The work needed to be completed accurately so the pipework could be correctly fitted, while also maintaining the integrity of the steel beam. As with any structural steel drilling, precision and control were essential to achieve a clean result and support the next stage of the project.

The Process

Our team attended the site with magnetic drilling equipment designed specifically for steel applications. Before starting, we checked the position of each hole in line with the plumber’s requirements, ensuring all drilling locations were set out correctly.

The mag drill was securely fixed to the RSJ, providing a stable setup for accurate drilling. Using the correct cutting tools for the steel section, we worked methodically through the beam, maintaining steady pressure and full control throughout.

Each hole was completed cleanly and to the required specification, leaving the steel beam prepared for the next stage of work.

Why Drilling is Effective for Pipework Installation

Mag drilling is a reliable method for preparing steel structures for new pipework. By using magnetic drilling equipment, we are able to keep the drill firmly in place, reducing movement and ensuring each hole is positioned exactly where it is needed. The controlled nature of the process helps protect the surrounding steel, while ensuring the finished result is suitable for follow-on trades.

Because the holes were drilled to the correct size and position, the plumbing team could carry out their installation efficiently without the need for additional modification.

A Clean Result Ready for Installation

All required holes were drilled through the RSJ as specified, leaving a clean and accurate finish ready for the plumbing team to install the new pipework.

Walter Thomson were able to continue with the refurbishment works without delay, supported by a straightforward and well-executed drilling process.
