We were recently approached by a new client, Switch Property Development, to assist with their latest project in Chapel Lane, Overton. Switch Property Development had an exciting new housing project on their hands, a six-unit, semi-detached development. They needed a very specific and precise service for the properties’ water supply.
Our team was brought in to core drill multiple angled holes, which would allow for the installation of insulated mains water ducts.
This was a brilliant opportunity for us to show off what we can do on a new build. The job called for careful planning and flawless execution, making sure every single hole was drilled to the exact specifications without causing any disruption to the new homes. For us, precision and safety are everything, and we knew we could deliver a perfect result.
The core drilling task was intricate and demanding.
We needed to drill six holes in total, with four at a depth of 550mm and two at a depth of 850mm. The key challenge, however, was the angle: each hole had to be cored at a precise 56-degree angle. This specific angle was crucial to ensure the insulated mains water duct would reach an external depth of 750mm. By achieving this depth on the outside of the properties, the risk of the water mains freezing in winter would be significantly reduced.
The angled hole allowed the duct to bend with ease during installation, ensuring a smooth and efficient fit. A further complication arose on two of the properties where the floor’s screed and insulated layers made setting our standard anchor points impossible. This required a creative and adaptable approach to maintain the necessary precision and safety standards.
To overcome the challenges, our team employed a combination of specialist equipment and expert techniques. For the two properties with unsuitable floor surfaces, the Gyro rig proved to be an absolute job saver. This innovative orange and black rig is designed for situations where traditional anchor points are not an option. It allows us to carry out drilling work safely and accurately by anchoring to a structurally sound ceiling above, ensuring the floor remains undisturbed.
Using our 142mm core bits, we meticulously set up the rig for each of the six holes. The precision of our equipment allowed us to maintain the exact 56-degree angle throughout the drilling process. We applied controlled pressure, letting the diamond bit do its work to achieve the specified depths of 550mm and 850mm. Our careful approach prevented any damage to the surrounding structure, ensuring the integrity of the new builds was preserved.
The project was completed successfully, with all six core holes drilled to the precise specifications required. The angled holes were perfect for the insulated mains water ducts, providing the necessary depth to protect against freezing and a clean path for installation. The use of the Gyro rig on the two tricky properties was key to the project's success, demonstrating our ability to adapt our methods to suit challenging site conditions.
Switch Property Development was extremely pleased with our professional and efficient service. Our work provided a solid foundation for the next stage of their build, contributing to a high-quality finish for the new homes. This project highlights our dedication to delivering expert solutions, even when faced with unique site constraints, and we look forward to working with Switch Property Development again.
