Staircase Opening Extensions in Reinforced Concrete

London
Pembridge Developments

Project Brief

We were recently called to Bayswater, West London, by Pembridge Developments to carry out specialist cutting and drilling work on their latest project. The task involved extending six existing staircase openings through reinforced concrete slabs, ensuring precise finishes to accommodate the new design.

Although we’re based in Warrington in the North West, we offer our commercial services nationwide, and this was another great example of us providing diamond drilling in London with the same precision and professionalism our clients receive across the UK.

The Process

To extend the staircase openings safely and accurately, our team of diamond drillers used a combination of stitch drilling and our powerful Pentruder track saw. Together, these techniques allowed us to cut and remove sections of reinforced concrete with minimal disruption and the absolute precision that we pride ourselves on.

The Pentruder saw, designed for heavy-duty concrete cutting, gave us the ability to make straight, controlled cuts through thick reinforced slabs. We also used stitch drilling to ensure clean corners and controlled breakout.

Our core drilling specialists worked methodically to manage the process, maintaining a tidy site while keeping noise, dust, and slurry under control.

What is Stitch Drilling?

Stitch drilling is a technique used when larger openings are required in reinforced concrete, but a single core bit can’t achieve the full size. The process involves drilling a series of overlapping core holes in sequence to form a precise line. Once complete, the overlapping holes create a neat opening which can then be broken out cleanly.

The benefits of stitch drilling include:

  • Accuracy: Openings can be created to exact dimensions, even in reinforced concrete.

  • Flexibility: Ideal for non-standard shapes or large areas that track sawing alone cannot achieve.

  • Control: Produces minimal vibration, reducing the risk of damage to surrounding structures.

  • Clean Finish: Delivers smooth edges and sharp corners, making it perfect for architectural requirements like staircases.

This method was key for Pembridge Developments’ project, as it ensured that the staircase extensions were delivered to the precise sizes needed without compromising the structural integrity of the slabs.

A Successful Result for Pembridge Developments

All six staircase openings were extended successfully, with straight, accurate cuts and a professional finish. The combination of stitch drilling and track sawing gave us complete control over the work, ensuring it was completed efficiently, safely, and with the high-quality finish required for a project of this scale.

Pembridge Developments were pleased with the outcome, and our work provided a strong foundation for the next stage of construction.
