We were asked to carry out a stitch drilling project at 1st Street in Manchester for Downing. The requirement was to form an opening through a combination of plasterboard, timber, and blockwork to a depth of 150mm.
The work was located at a high level, which meant access and setup needed to be carefully planned. In addition, the nature of the materials and the drilling position meant that traditional rig-mounted drilling was not suitable, as there was no reliable fixing point available on the face of the wall.
Our team attended the site and accessed the work area using a scissor lift to safely reach the high-level position. Before starting, we marked out the opening to ensure the correct size and alignment.
Due to the lack of a suitable fixing point, we used one of our specialised handheld drilling systems. This type of equipment is particularly effective when working on smaller diameter holes and in situations where a standard rig cannot be secured.
We carried out the stitch drilling process by forming a series of closely spaced holes around the perimeter of the required opening. Working steadily and with full control, we were able to cut through the plasterboard, timber, and blockwork, maintaining accuracy throughout.
Stitch drilling is a practical method for forming openings where full core drilling is not suitable. It allows work to be carried out in situations where access is restricted, or where setting up a drilling rig is not possible.
By creating a series of holes to form the opening, the process gives a high level of control and can be used across a range of materials. It is particularly useful for smaller diameter work and for adapting to more complex and constrained environments.
This makes it a reliable solution for projects where flexibility and precision are required.
The opening was completed to the required size and depth, leaving a clean and accurate result through all materials. The area was left ready for the next stage of work, with no unnecessary damage to the surrounding surfaces.
Downing were able to continue with their project as planned, supported by a straightforward and well-executed drilling process.
We regularly support contractors with specialist drilling solutions in situations where access is limited or standard methods are not suitable. From stitch drilling to core drilling and concrete cutting, our approach is always based on selecting the right equipment and delivering accurate, reliable results on site.
